Sow to Grow Community Garden Work Day

Expired

Description

The Sow to Grow Community Garden was established in the spring of 2019 in partnership with the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program and the Junior League of Peoria.

The garden is located on a vacant lot adjacent to Phoenix Community Development Services' Glendale Commons housing for formerly homeless families.  Throughout the spring, summer and fall, Junior League volunteers and a Co-operative Extension Master Gardener led weekly educational sessions in the garden to teach the children and their parents how to grow and harvest fresh vegetables.  Children then learned how to cook and prepare what they had grown. The children absolutely loved their “mornings and afternoons in the garden” and benefitted from the many advantages gardening provides!

Volunteers are needed to help prepare the garden for summer planting.  Tasks to be completed include: filling raised beds with soil, spreading mulch. weeding and more.  We will be utilizing social distancing practices to keep everyone safe and ask that all volunteers bring masks to wear while they are volunteering.
