Looking for a fun opportunity to bond with coworkers and teammates?

If you and your team are volunteering remotely to hold a food drive, complete a craft project, or assemble one of our "Save the Day!" kits, here are some tips and tricks for a great team building experience when volunteering separately but together.

Start by reviewing the needs/projects on this site and pick one to two projects that appeal the most to your team. Register yourself or someone else as the team leader.
  • By selecting projects your team can collectively support, your team will make a bigger impact by directing your team's efforts towards specific needs.
  • Selecting projects for your team also gives your employees/members a sense of still being part of a group effort even though they are working independently and remotely.

Create a team-building experience and manage your team.
  • Use the need description and team features on volunteer.hoiunitedway.org to share project information with your team.
  • Assign a team member to manage/lead communications with the team. Ongoing communication is vital to successful virtual and remote volunteering.
  • If you are completing a remote  hands-on project, coordinate how you will collect and deliver your completed projects to United Way.
    • For the Save the Day kits and craft projects, please make arrangements with United Way to drop-off your kits.
    • Host a drive-thru drop-off at your organization and ask a few members of your team to collect your other team members' donations as they arrive.
  • If you are participating in a virtual STEAM education demonstration or reading a book for our preschool partners, use video conferencing so team members can participate together. Divide and conquer the demonstration steps or take turns reading.
  • Set-up fun incentives for your team members such as who collects the most, finishes first, or meets a specific goal of your choice.
  • Host a Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams session while your team works on a project together, yet remotely. Get social!
  • Encourage your team members to take selfies of their work! If posting to social media, use @hoiunitedway #heartofillinoisvolunteers
